Today's Gospel + image + catechesis

January 24th: St. Francis de Sales, bishop

Gospel text (Mt 11,25-30): At that time Jesus said in reply, «Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest». At that time Jesus said in reply, «I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.

»Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light».

Today we celebrate a saint who was a great teacher of souls: he was cheerful and optimistic, he had a lot of patience, he cared a lot for people and knew how to lead them to God. In 1602 he was consecrated as Bishop of Geneva. He met Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, with whom he founded the Order of the Visitation of Saint Mary. St. Francis de Sales also wrote a book that became very famous: "Introduction to the Devout Life."

- St. Francis was one of the first spiritual authors to promote holiness by following Jesus anywhere in the world and from ordinary life: "Be sure that wheresoever our lot is cast we may and must aim at the perfect life"
