Liturgical day: September 15th: Our Lady of Sorrows

Gospel text (Lk 2,33-35): Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, «See him; He will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light». The father of Jesus and his mother wondered at what was said about the child. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, «See him; He will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light».

Today Jesus has 40 days. Mary and Joseph take him to the Temple to present him to God, as the Law required. Yesterday (14th) Jesus told Nicodemus that the Son of Man had to be "lifted up." Today St. Mary will learn something more about this "uprising": it will be a path of pain, which will also reach her ("a sword will pierce your own soul").
