Gospel text (Mt 5:43-48): Jesus said to his disciples: “(...) Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Universal call to holiness

Fr. Àngel CALDAS i Bosch (Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, these verses of the Gospel are integrated in the chapter of the Beatitudes and they transmit the same fundamental tenet. It is the intimate newness of the doctrine of Christ and of His heart: to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you! He knew this was quite hard to "swallow".

"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect". The fight for holiness is not an option only for highly gifted ones. If we are allowed a similitude, the "call" of God is in the "DNA" of our essential being. It is a divine vocation that starts with our Baptism and drives us to live our union with God, with the strength of the Spirit, throughout all circumstances in our lives. No one could survive outside of this call. The Second Vatican Council taught us this doctrine.

—O Lord, let me look inside my soul. I want to find You and your call to fight for love, while you become "visible" for those that surround me and, thus, your divine horizons may be opened to all men.
