February 5th: Memorial of Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr

Download
Gospel text (Lk 9:23-26): Jesus said to all, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. Jesus said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels."

Today we commemorate the martyrdom of a young Christian virgin Agatha who lived during one of the bloodiest persecutions by the Roman Empire, under Emperor Decio. She had consecrated her virginity to God, and when she was arrested for being a Christian, first, they tried to convince her to make sacrifices to the gods; not accomplising that, they forced her to prostitution as punishment. Agatha asked God for help and did not faint before his torturers.

—Now she is patron of Catania and all of Sicily and the surroundings of the Etna volcano, and she is invoked to prevent fire damage.
