April 26th: St. Isidore, bishop and doctor of the Church

Gospel text (Mt 5,13-16): Jesus said: «You are the light of the world». Jesus said: «You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its strength, how can it be made salty again? It has become useless. It can only be thrown away and people will trample on it. You are the light of the world. A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and covers it; instead it is put on a lamp-stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before others, so that they may see the good you do and praise your Father in heaven».

Today we celebrate saint Isidore of Seville. He was a younger brother of Leander, Archbishop of Seville. The young Isidore had succeeded his brother Leander on the episcopal throne of Seville in 599. Then he had to contend an inner strife between a desire for solitude to dedicate himself solely to meditation on the word of God, and the demands of charity to his brethren for whose salvation, as Bishop, he felt responsible.

—Isidore sought in Christ's example the definitive confirmation of a just orientation of life and said: «Just as we must love God in contemplation, so we must love our neighbour with action».
