August 10th: Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

Gospel text (Jn 12:24-26): Jesus said: “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.” Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Those who love their life destroy it, and those who despise their life in this world keep it for everlasting life. Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him».

Today we admire the serenity with which St. Lawrence faced his martyrdom, in the year 257. Those were times of persecution. Pope St. Sixtus was martyred. Lawrence was one of the deacons attending the Pope. He was concerned with helping the poor in Rome. The authorities granted him three days gather the riches of the Church and hand them over to the Emperor. But, oh surprise! St. Lawrence appeared with a long line of poor, crippled, blind and who were suffering... those which he attended, and declared that these were the true treasures of the Church!

-21 centuries later, the treasures of Christ have not changed ... We are the ones who should change!
