Liturgical day: January 31st: St. John Bosco, priest

Gospel text (Mt 18,1-5): Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, «Whoever receives such a child in my name receives me». The disciples came to Jesus and said: «Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?». Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, «I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes lowly like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child in my name receives me».

Today we celebrate the "prince of education" (thus Pius XI proclaimed Don Bosco). Already ordered, he made his true passion come true in Turin: the education of young people, the poorest and most abandoned. Every Sunday he gathered a small group of abandoned young people in a kind of school he called the "Oratorio" ... In 1856, they already were 150 inmates, 4 workshops, a printing press and 10 priests and 500 more as day students. In 1859, Don Bosco and his 22 companions decided to organize the congregation, the Salesians. Shortly after came the foundation of the female congregation, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

- «I have promised God that until my last breath I shall have lived for my poor young people» (St. John Bosco).
