Liturgical day: August 10th: St. Lawrence, martyr

Gospel text (Jn 12,24-26): Jesus said, «Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him». Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Those who love their life destroy it, and those who despise their life in this world keep it for everlasting life. Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him».

Today we admire the coolness with which St. Lawrence faced his martyrdom in 257. They were times of persecution. Pope St. Sixtus was martyred. Lawrence was one of the deacons attending the Pope. He was concerned with helping the indigent of Rome. The authority granted him three days to turn over the riches of the Church and deliver them to the Emperor. But, oh surprise! St. Lawrence appeared with a long line of indigent, crippled, blind and the suffering... those which he attended, and declared that these were the true treasures of the Church!

-21 centuries later, the treasures of Christ have not changed ... We are the ones who should change!
