Gospel text
Jn 8:51-59
So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.”
Gospel's Commentary
Today Jesus Christ uses once again His more "divine": name: "I AM". By applying Himself this name He declares that He is God and introduces us to the mystery of the Holy Trinity. It was an innovation! Humankind, after the original sin, easily fell into the acceptance of many gods ("polytheism"); Israel - guided by God - believed in only one God ("monotheism"). Jesus, the "I Am", speaks of three Persons in the same God. —They are not three gods, but one only God who, being Love, is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
