Today's Gospel + image + catechesis

Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

Gospel text (Jn 15:18-21): «If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you». Jesus said to his disciples; “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.”

Today, Jesus Christ warns us about the difficulties of following Him. He asks us for a love of charity, that is, the same love with which God loves us: total respect for all people, wherever they may be, without excluding anyone. Faced with the demands of this "new love", Jesus suffered the opposition of many who did not understand him.

— Is there anything like "a sluggish love"? Those who lead a life of "tranquility", without any engagements, doing only what they want, cannot endure authentic, demanding love. Perhaps, there will be times when you will have to suffer the scorn of those "self-indulgent" elements.
