Saturday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel text (Lk 6:1-5): Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a Sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry? How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions?” Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Today Jesus defends us again from the foolishness of the Pharisees. It so happens that some disciples were walking with the Lord. As they were hungry, they began to pluck ears to eat the grain (as if they were eating "popcorn"). But, what a mistake! It was Saturday. Sin, said the Pharisees. But it wasn’t God who said it, it was made-up by the Pharisees.

-The dramatic thing is that 20 centuries later we keep on doing the very same thing: we love "religion à la carte"... We invent our own religion (which usually coincides with what we like). But it is no longer a thing of God! For I tell God what things are like...
