August 14th: St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, priest and martyr

Gospel text (Jn 15,12-16): Jesus said to his disciples, «There is no greater love than this, to give one's life for one's friends». Jesus said to his disciples, «This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, to give one's life for one's friends; and you are my friends if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants any more, because servants do not know what their master is about. Instead I have called you friends, since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father. You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. And everything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you».

Today we celebrate Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe. Being very young, he entered the seminary of the Franciscans. Great devotee of the Virgin Mary, Father Kolbe promoted the movement called "The Immaculate Militia" and a magazine dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Maximiliano María spent five years as a missionary volunteer in Japan. Back in Poland, in the middle of World War II, he was captured by the Nazi regime. In Auschwitz, despite the terrible conditions of life, he continued his priestly ministry.

- There he offered to die in the place of another prisoner, married and with children. Thus he imitated the example of Jesus Christ - the best friend! - who gave his life for us. You can also do something for men!
