Gospel text (Lk 24:35-48): While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (…). He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures (…).

The Tradition

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are —again— in the cenacle where, during Easter, Jesus instituted the Eucharist. Right there —hidden, for fear of the Jews— the Apostles were assembled and Jesus resurrected appears to them. He wishes them peace, He shows them His body and He brings to their minds that already the Scriptures prophetically anticipated those occurrences. And, even more important: He asks them to bear witness to these events.

After the Ascension, the Apostles preached what they had been able to see, firsthand. They provided the ensuing generations with that evidence. They did it orally, that is, by word of mouth: which is the Tradition. Later on, these teachings were written down, thus, bringing into being the New Testament. Tradition and Sacred Scripture shape the flow of the one and only "river" (Revelation) which, for centuries, has never stopped flowing and having an impact in the hearts of many men.

—Holy Spirit, enlighten me to know and understand the wealth of Revelation with which the Church steers me and protects my conscience.
