Gospel text (Lk 4:24-30): Jesus said to the people in the synagogue at Nazareth: “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place..."

Jesus of Nazareth, key to a new reading of the Law and the Prophets

EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)

Today, we can see the disbelief of Jesus’ followers, after He had just told them that the Scripture was being fulfilled in Him: "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me..." (Is 61,1). Indeed, the Law and the Prophets speak of the future Messiah.

Related with the Paschal mystery, Zechariah proclaims a kingdom that extends from "sea to sea" (omen of a new universality of salvation); a King of peace (who destroys the weapons of war and arrives riding on a donkey); the slain shepherd, who saves by His death; the Pierced One... In Isaiah we find the vision of the Suffering Servant of God who in serving offers up His life for the multitude and thus brings salvation... What in them is still a mysterious vision, the precise shape of which cannot be clearly discerned, slowly becomes clear in the course of Jesus Christ’s ministry, to acquire its definite shape only after the Resurrection.

—Jesus Himself, after Easter, would become the key to a new reading of the Law and the Prophets.
