Gospel text (Jn 5:17-30): Jesus answered the Jews: “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” For this reason they tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God (…).

The fourth Gospel clearly says that Jesus is the son of God

Today, we center our attention on the image of Jesus according to the fourth Gospel. In the "Jesus of the Synoptics" (first three weeks of Lent) the mystery of Jesus’ oneness with the Father is ever present and it determines everything, even though it remains hidden beneath His humanity. His disciples and adversaries were also beginning —step by step, and at key moments with great immediacy— to recognize this absolutely new reality.

In the Gospel according to St. John —where instead of parables, we hear extended discourses built around images, and the main theater of Jesus’ activity shifts from Galilee to Jerusalem— Jesus’ divinity appears unveiled. His disputes with the Jewish Temple authorities, taken together, could be said to anticipate His trial before the Sanhedrin, which John, unlike the Synoptics, does not mention specifically.

—Jesus, You have made God known to us because You are the only Begotten son, Who is in the Father’s "heart" (cf. Jn 1:18).
