Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, "... Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him..."
The Eucharist
Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)Today Jesus reveals the most precious of gifts “His infinite Love” which he is prepared to give to us: He himself, is the sacrifice of his own Body and Blood spilt for our salvation. Only great faith and great confidence can truly comprehend these words. Many Jews refused to accept this fact and would not believe.
The historical Fact, is that Jesus Christ said at the last supper; “This is my Body….; This is my Blood…”. Literally His Body and His Blood. Christ is God and can do this. If he says this then, why should we doubt? The Catholic Church has never doubted it. We are not asked to understand this miracle, but to accept it. Curiously, those Jews that rejected this idea, had witnessed the multiplication of the loaves and fish; a miracle that they did not reject!
—Jesus, I believe that with the Eucharist “you deepen and perpetuate” your, passion, death and resurrection. I can partake in all of this, receiving you, simply by believing with faith that your Body is present in Communion. Extraordinary!
