Gospel text (Mt 6:19-23): Jesus said to his disciples: “(...) For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

Moral law: the inner path to our heart

Fr. Antoni ORIOL i Tataret (Vic, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are invited to look at things with God’s eyes, that is, with a Christian criterion. This is the basis of the "moral law": an inducement to have our own heart embodying God’s piercing gaze.

This has a double advantage. In the first place, the attainment of truth, which makes us become wise and free: wise, because we can understand in depth the "why"; free, because we move them away from any deceitful imposition. In the second place, because we efficiently contribute to the fulfillment of God’s Will, that is, we become conscious actors of His plan of Universal Salvation. In short, to act like a Christian is to achieve the great target of being intelligent and good or, in other words, to become wise and a saint.

—O Lord! Thank You because you urge us to do whatever we can and you ask us to do what we cannot do! We cannot do it by ourselves; but this is why we, Christians, pray.
