Gospel text (Jn 6:24-35): (…) “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (…).

Old and New Testament

Fr. Àngel CALDAS i Bosch (Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, the problem with Jesus’ listeners is the proof of His divinity. The Lord reminds them of the miracle of the manna that fed the Hebrew while crossing the desert, after that memorable famine. The very same God that led His people in the Old Testament is now calling them and protecting them. The manna was the sign of His divine mercy that culminates with the Eucharist, inside the same story of Love.

It is rather mean to submit our belief to having God imposing Himself to us with signs (is this faith?). But there we have a signal: the wonderful link between Old and New Testament. Because in the Old “throbs” and pulsates the New and, at the same time, the New unveils and culminates the Old. In Christ the messianic prophecies about the Messiah-Savior, are fulfilled.

—O Lord, please make that, each time, I am more aware that you have been “chasing” me forever with your Love, and that your story mixes every day with mine.
