Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
Moral conscience numbing
EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)Today, Jesus Christ warns us against the numbing of moral conscience. God's forgiveness reaches as far as His Love does, but… if we would deny His existence and would renege on His Love (this is a "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit"), could we ask then for His forgiveness?; could God forgive without being asked forgiveness? God does not impose his forgiveness! Love includes an inexhaustible availability of forgiveness, but forgiveness presupposes our acknowledging sin as a sin.
The fathers of the Church considered the "insensitivity" (inability to repent) the greatest sin of the pagan world. If today there is a problem of moral decomposition in our society, it is nothing but a consequence of the absence of God in our lives. Failure to recognize my blame, does not save me, because conscience numbness, my incapacity to recognize the evil in me for what it is, is my own fault. If there is no God, then we will have to seek shelter on lies such as the "illusion of my innocence”.
—O Jesus, meeting You transforms me making me able to hear the very Good.
