Gospel text (Mk 8:22-26): When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethsaida, people brought to him a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him (...). Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on the man and asked, “Do you see anything?” Looking up the man replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.” Then he laid hands on the man’s eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly (...).

The cure of the blind man in Bethsaida: symbol of the path of our faith

Today, already on His way to Jerusalem, Jesus performs a sign of great symbolic meaning: the progressive recuperation of the sight represents the path of our blindness cure followed by Peter ant the others —and by us too!— until arriving to the absolute confession of Jesus as “Son of God”.

After the time of the great preaching in Galilee, this is a decisive moment for Jesus: the way to the cross as well as the invitation to follow Him carrying “their crosses” clearly distinguishes His disciples from those who hear but don’t follow Him. This clearly transforms the disciples into the initial nucleus of Jesus’ new family: the future Church.

—One of the features of this community is that we are “on the way” with Jesus. And another feature is that our decision to accompany Jesus is based on seeing “everything clearly”, in “knowing” Jesus, the Son of God, who at the same time gratifies us with a new and deeper knowledge of the only true God.
