Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
St. Escholastica, virgin (480-547)
Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)Today we celebrate Saint Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict, founder of the Western Christian monasticismt. Scholastic founded, at the foot of Montecasino, a convent for women.
The only historical source on the life of Saint Scholastica is on chapters 33 and 34 from the second book of the "Dialogues" of St. Gregory the Great. Pope Gregory tells of Saint Scholastica that, “consecrated to the omnipotent God since the time of his childhood, he used to visit his brother once a year” and that “she spent a lot of time in holy conversations with him”. The last time they met was a lesson for Saint Benedict. Indeed, wanting him to return to his convent, his sister asked him to stay even longer, but St. Benedict replied that the rule did not allow it. "That saint, upon hearing her brother's refusal ... prayed to the almighty God." There arose such a storm that "neither Benedict nor his fellow monks could leave."
- Before the saint's sadness, his sister replied: “I have asked our good Lord, and He graciously granted my request”
