Gospel text (Mt 12:38-42): Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” He said to them in reply, “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet..."

God won't submit to experiments

EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)

Today, we wonder how to reach God: Do we have any signal of His existence? Jesus Christ will not refrain from answering this question; however, His answer starts from the Scriptures and illuminates itself with a concealed reference to His resurrection. An answer that surely does not fulfill the expectations of those men nor of some modern interlocutors. Why is that so?

There's a basic mistake: we reduce God to an object and impose on Him our laboratory conditions, only assuming as real what is tangible and controllable. But God does not submit to experiments! This is not the way to find Him, because this is depriving God of his divine nature, putting us above Him. Those who reflect in this way will place themselves in a God-like position: not only do they degrade God, but also the world and themselves.

—Jesus, thank You because You haven't imposed Yourself upon us with tangible evidence, but rather You conquer us through the love you tenderly show on the Cross and through the intimate dialog of prayer.
