Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
Eternity in the Father’s House
Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)Today, Jesus bestows upon us our heart’s most important yearning: eternity in the Father’s House. Certainly, this Christian hope is an “already given” expectation: God has been incarnated and —each and every day— He "offers" us His redeeming sacrifice through the Eucharist. But our earthly hope is, above all, an expectation for “the beyond" of time: the eternal life.
The fulfillment of our heart’s longing, which is love, love that knows what love is like, needs an horizon of eternity. Even more so: without eternity it is not possible to love. Love, in fact, is a fight against death. If there would be no other life but this one, it would be a cruel joke… because authentic love always demands more and must be “endlessly” projected (eternity).
—Jesus, without You, my love is an unattainable promise, for I can only offer finitude. But, with You, this is not a nonsensical promise, for in our human love together with Yours, eternity dwells.
