Gospel text (Mt 7:1-5): Jesus said to his disciples: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you (...).”

Fraternity: "judging" with Christ’s gaze

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Jesus Christ, as our Master, asks us to help others, and to do so with humility, setting a good example and avoiding a critical spirit. At times we “see” the faults of others while failing to recognize our own; or we demand from others what we ourselves do not do. The Lord warns us about the danger of hypocrisy and calls us to be honest with ourselves.

To love someone is to desire that person's growth and improvement. To do that, we often need to observe, evaluate, and make judgments. But how can we do this in a positive way? The answer is twofold. First, by setting a good example ourselves, which encourages those around us. Second, by looking at others through the eyes of Christ: guided by the truth and accompanied by mercy. That is true brotherhood.

—Jesus, I want to care for those around me as You care for us. I see You welcoming and forgiving Mary Magdalene; I see You receiving Dismas, the good thief, and bringing him into heaven. Help me to help others!
