Gospel text (Jn 16:29-33): The disciples said to Jesus; “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God ...”

Jesus Christ, the fullness of Revelation

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM (Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the disciples claim that Jesus speaks clearly; they can understand His Revelation; they believe His “time” has come. But they do not understand that He reveals a spiritual Kingdom, not a political one, as they dream about. Jesus deters them: their faith lives on the line. He predicts they will forsake Him and will leave Him alone with the Father.

God revealed Himself to His people through the prophets and He promised them that His Son would crown this revelation. The patriarchs kept this expectation. God sent the Son, His Word, so that the revelation would attain its plenitude. We cannot look forward to other revelations. The “private” ones do not add anything to the basic revelation ending in Jesus and confirmed by His Spirit.

—Father, we thank you because your Son unveils the mystery of your divinity and your Spirit confirms it to us in the Pentecost. Do, that we can incorporate your Trinitarian Life into our lives. Amen.
