Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money..."
The "Parable of the talents"
EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)Today, the "Parable of the talents" could be named the "Parable of the coward servant", who, out of fear, prefers to hide his master’s money, rather than investing it and multiplying it, as the other servants did. The "Talent" that has been given to us, the treasure of the truth, should not be concealed, it should be transmitted to others so that it may penetrate and renew Humanity as does the yeast.
Today, in the Western world we are quick to bury the treasure, both for cowardice —ultimately, unbelief— as well as negligence: we bury it because we do not want to be disturbed by the truth, as we seek to live our own life without the weight of its responsibility.
—Lord-God, the gift of Your knowledge, the gift of Your love in the open heart of Your Son Jesus, should urge us to allow all corners of the Earth to contemplate Your Salvation.
