Gospel text (Mk 11:27-33): Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them? ...”

The source of Jesus authority

Today, we answer the question that the “wise man of Jerusalem”, driven by envy, ask the Lord. Jesus’ doctrine and actions are only understandable because they come from the immediate contact with the Father, from the vision of the One “who is at the Father's side” (cf. Jn 1:18). It is the Word of the Son: and its authority lies there!

The promise of the new prophet is fulfilled in Jesus. In Him the imperfect reality of Moses becomes complete reality: Jesus lives before God’s face as Son: He lives in the closest unity with the Father. Only by accepting this fact can we really understand Jesus as He reveals Himself to us in the New Testament.

—Jesus used to go out to "the mountain" and there he prayed all night, "alone" with the Father. These brief notes slightly open the veil of the mystery, they allow us to glance the filial existence of Jesus and to have a glimpse at the ultimate source of His actions, His teachings and His suffering.
