Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
"What is Truth?"
EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)Today, we must learn from the attitude of the Canaanite (i.e., not Jewish) woman: she kneels before the truth. "What is truth"?, expressed in a derogatory tone, is what Jesus heard while being unjustly judged. The Canaanite, instead, knelt before the truth not only physically, but also intellectually: "It is true, Lord", she said.
The Being of God is the absolute truth: it is the everlasting, the origin and the foundation of it all. And Christ is the incarnate Truth, the mirror in which we can look at It. Jesus Christ did not say "I am the Custom", but "I am the Truth". Christ does not simply sanction the custom; on the contrary, He wants us to get rid of our habits ("they all do it..." we tend to adduce). He wants us to abandon them and demands from us to seek the truth, which introduces us to the reality of the Creator, of our own being.
—O Lord, I do not argue with You because you are the Truth and I surrender to you.
