Today's Gospel + short theological explanation
Jesus, the "Son of God"
EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)Today, Jesus Christ reveals himself to us as the “Son of God”. In the ancient East this title had been used in the political world: the king was considered as a “son of God”. In Christ this expression goes further and means a special bond with God (which is manifested in the Cross and the resurrection).
Only the Son really “knows” the Father (“feels at ease”, with the Father). “Knowing”, in this case, implies “sameness”: the spiritual unity of really knowing is only possible because there is the unity of being. Also, the Son’s will is one with the Father’s will. This is a constant in the Gospels, but is presented in a dramatic manner in the Mount of Olives, where Jesus assumes the human will and introduces it in his filial will and, in this way, He inserts it within His unity of will with the Father.
—O Jesus, we beg of you that, united to You, the Son, we may "concur" with the Father’s will and, thus, we may also become His sons.
