Gospel text (Mt 9:18-26): While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. She said to herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.” Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.” ...

Heaven is not empty

EDITORIAL TEAM evangeli.net (based on texts by Benedict XVI) (Città del Vaticano, Vatican)

Today, before the ostensible power of the elements of the world (the unappealable death, an incurable disease), Jairus and the woman with "hemorrhage" favor a new hope: Jesus Christ! This setting reverses the conception of the world —also on the rise, today— that discerns divinity in the Cosmic Forces, but not in a God to Whom we pray.

It is not the elemental spirits of the Cosmos, the laws of matter, which ultimately govern the world and mankind, but a personal God. Reason, will, love, have the "final say”: a Person. And, if we know this Person, and He knows us, then truly, the inexorable power of material elements no longer has the “last word”; we are not slaves of the universe and of its laws, we are now free.

—O Jesus, by contemplating You, we are convinced more than ever that there is nothing casual nor fatal in our lives: there is one Spirit within You that has revealed Itself as sheer Love. Heaven is not empty!
