Gospel text (Mt 7:21-29): Jesus said to his disciples: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven... Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock..."

The wisdom of the Law of God

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench (Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are reaching the end of the so called "Sermon of the mount” (Mathew 5-7). Jesus, a master of convincing authority, is teaching the "requisites" to belong in His Kingdom —of love!— and how should we behave after the Law of God. Actually listening to the Word of God implies to put it into effect. He who does it will have prudence and wisdom.

The ancient Israelites were very conscious of their wisdom for they explicitly knew the Law of God. At present, however, there is an air of animosity towards this law, particularly if it is the Law of God or if it is a "moral law". But this is not an imposition but a "gift" that teaches us the "reasons" of human growth and of the nearness of our Creator. Let us learn from our own history: where the Law of God is rejected or unknown to the people, human dignity is also unknown and is easily mistreated.

—Lord-God, help me to put into effect your precepts to acquire the true wisdom of life.
